MIDDLE SCHOOL ELECTIVES

Art 1:
Students have the opportunity for creative expression in two and three-dimensional art, learn the basic elements of design, and become familiar with the works of some major artists.

Art-Advanced-Student must have completed Art 1:
The second year art student should be reasonably comfortable with basic art techniques and tools. They should become more visually aware and increasingly capable of meeting standards of quality in their own work. Students will be expected to execute more complicated forms, in two-dimensional media. In general they should be able to build on basic drawing and painting skills to develop and communicate individual themes and ideas.

Concert Band:
Band-Students develop technical skills on their respective instruments. As these skills are developed, students will learn to interpret music with sensitivity and musicality which are acquired through various rehearsal formats.

Choir:
Members of the Portland Christian Middle School Chorus will have the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of choral singing. Several opportunities for performance throughout the year enable each student to demonstrate their acquired knowledge and share in the privilege of presenting their gifts of praise to the Lord.

Computer Science:
Students will be given experience in several applications including graphics, database, spreadsheet, multimedia and desktop publishing.

Drama:
An introductory class teaching acting skills and other production related job skills.

Guitar:
This class teaches fundamentals of guitar playing and note reading. Students with little or no experience will learn to play most common chords and read three different kinds of guitar notation. They will perform at least once in public. Students must provide their own guitar.

Home Management:
This class is designed to give students a working knowledge of the basic food groups, kitchen safety, how to read recipes, and plan a menu. They will learn to prepare and graciously serve a fine meal. Students will also receive instruction in the use and care of tools used in sewing, as well as how to cut a pattern correctly and prepare a finished sewing project.

Keyboarding:
Students will master: letter keyboarding techniques, word-processing figure-key operations, symbol-key operations, word skill, correspondence formatting, and speed building techniques. (Students may test out of this class.) This class should be completed by the end of 8th grade.

Mythology:
This course begins with a look at World Mythology to study the concept of myth and why it appeals to all cultures. A closer study of Norse Mythology to reveal the roots of Tolkien's Lord of the Ring books is a major theme. In addition to Tolkien, other modern mythmakers, Star Wars, are discussed.

Yearbook:
Middle School Yearbook is a one semester course in which students use over 30 separate skills to plan, create, and dispen the school yearbook. The course offers a unique combination of life, journalism, business, and technology skills bundled in fast paced and fun environment. The class covers photo taking, photo editing, writing, proofreading, graphic design, as we other proficiencies to help create a professional and lasting product.
