Sociology/Technology/Dangerous Peer Pressures Dear Parents, We have uploaded a PDF of an abc article with the website address about an issue that is becoming prevalent in our culture right now. Please be aware of this and keep a very close watch on your child's activities with their cell phones. Kids of this age do not have a pre-frontal cortex in full function mode until their 20's and that is where the reasoning center of the brain is found. They can make mistakes that can affect them for years to come and it is our job as parents to safeguard them when we can. The younger the student the more important it is to restrict access to what can be dangerous technology like: cell phones with internet access, cell phone cameras, myspace or facebook accounts without parental safeguards, internet access without filtering programs, texting, instant messaging, chat rooms, and the list goes on. All of these are portholes to your child's life for outside individuals who may seek to harm them or even cyber bully them. You may not even know that your child is engaged in a cyber relationship with another person or that they have sent pics of themselves to others. All over the nation, schools and parents are being caught off guard by these problems and students lives are being ruined by split moment decisions to engage in online or cell phone situations. Once something is out there, you cannot get it back. Please watch what your children are doing with the technology that is made available to them. As we did not have these items available to us when we were young, it can be hard to understand the tremendous pressure that is out there for our kids. Maybe in this case, less really is more. "Be sober of spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. But resist him, firm in your faith." 1 Peter 5:8 Mrs. Anderson and Mr. Larson 'Sexting' Teens Can Go Too Far PDF Links: |
