The Counseling Department at Portland Christian Schools serves as an advocate and support to students (and their families) in their educational, spiritual, social and emotional development through guidance and educational services, individual counseling and prayer.     DR. SHAWN JONES - Guidance Counselor for grades 10 - 12; Lead Counselor.     Specifically, the Counseling Department provides the following services:

SIXTH/SEVENTH GRADE

  • PC Orientation - for middle school students new to the San Rafael campus (mostly 6th and 7th grade); discuss scheduling, use of daily planner, study skills, etc.
  • Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) test. Used to track and follow up on student academic progress.

EIGHTH GRADE YEAR

  • High School Orientation for students: credit requirements, importance of high school transcript, emphasis on high school as preparation for college
  • High School Orientation for parents
  • Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) test. Used to track and follow up on student academic progress.
  • Creation and maintenance of individual high school 4-year plans, beginning in the spring of 8th grade year

FRESHMAN YEAR

  • Freshman Refresher (9th grade) - covers goal setting, study skills, importance of high school transcript; college prep emphasized
  • Freshman Follow-up - counselor meets individually with students to follow-up on goals, academic progress
  • Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) test. Used to track and follow up on student academic progress.

SOPHOMORE YEAR

  • Oregon Statewide Assessment - Measures academic progress of students according to Oregon standards.
  • Students are encouraged to take the PSAT (practice test for SAT).

JUNIOR YEAR

  • PSAT (practice test for the SAT); also National Merit Scholarship competition for juniors
  • Advanced Placement testing (typically 11th and 12th) - given at the completion of Advanced Placement classes; possible college credit available with scores of 3 or above
  • SAT & ACT registration information and help (primarily 11th and 12th)
  • Meet individually with students to discuss early college plans; complete credit check

SENIOR YEAR

  • Advanced Placement testing (typically 11th and 12th) - given at the completion of Advanced Placement classes; possible college credit available with scores of 3 or above
  • SAT & ACT registration information and help (primarily 11th and 12th)
  • Meet with individual students to follow up on college plans, application process, credit check
  • Parent Financial Aid Night - covers the FAFSA, grants, scholarships and other financial aid
  • Help student athletes register with the NCAA Eligibility Center - for eligibility to compete at the NCAA Division 1 and 2 college level
  • Sending of high school transcripts and college recommendations

EACH YEAR

  • Forecasting: information and instruction for choosing classes for the upcoming school year
  • Help develop student schedules based on individual student needs and requests
  • Schedule changes throughout the year
  • Creation and maintenance of student high school 4-year plans, beginning in the spring of 8th grade year
  • Periodic credit checks to ensure graduation
  • Test score distribution and interpretation for students and parents
  • Facilitate Parent/Teacher conferences when warranted
  • Identifying, monitoring and individually meeting with students who are struggling academically
  • Referral of students for educational testing when warranted
  • Referral of students to the EXCEL program - our student "helps" program for those with diagnosed or suspected learning challenges
  • Personal counseling: emotional, social and spiritual counseling for individual students; referrals to professional counselors/therapists when warranted
  • Campus visits by college admissions representatives
  • Information on local college fairs (juniors required to attend at least one)
  • Christian College Fair - sponsored in part by the PC National Honor Society
  • California Christian College Tour - available to 10th - 12th grade
  • College catalogs, viewbooks and files available
  • Scholarship file available
