Glorifying Christ’s Birth
Overheard outside the Chapel of Mary, as everyone mingled and celebrated their performance, “It was lovely… so beautiful, ethereal… our students were fantastic!”
Portland Christian School’s High School Choir has had the honor of performing at The Grotto’s Christmas Festival of Lights for over 15 years except a hiatus during the Covid years. This cherished opportunity allows the choir to perform at one of Portland’s most iconic landmarks. Approximately 100 other schools, churches, and civic choirs from across the region are also part of the festival’s schedule.
The Grotto, dedicated in 1924, serves as the “Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother” and is a ministry of the Servite Friars (thegrotto.org). During the Christmas Festival of Lights, The Grotto welcomes visitors to experience a beautifully lit paved trail narrating the story of the birth of Jesus, with plaques depicting various Christmas scenes. In addition to the lights, guests enjoy carolers, puppet shows, and at least five concerts each evening inside the Chapel of Mary. The chapel’s cathedral-like acoustics draw families, regardless of the weather, to sit and enjoy the festive music.
Under the direction of Mr. Joseph Ostrand, with piano accompanist Corin Parker, 20 choir students performed a 45-minute set of 13 songs. After the performance, students, families, and friends gathered outside, celebrating the memorable event.
One current PC student exclaimed, “I’ll be joining the choir next year and will definitely perform here at The Grotto!” after watching his fellow classmates enchant their families and friends on a rainy December evening.
